Page 3, News, Tuesday, April 9, 1991 Enviro Club is taking action at Schreiber Public School by Rob Cotton The News Students at Schreiber Public School are taking action to clean up their environment and in doing so taking responsibility for their own future. The school has always been involved with the environment but this the Grade 6 class took on the project of forming the Schreiber Public School Enviro Club. One of the first things the Club did was to support the efforts of a local environmental group, EAGER, in establishing a method of, collecting newsprint for recycling. They informed Schreiber Township Council of their support in a letter. Club members also Dencrin & Members of the Schreiber Public School Enviro Club around the Pitch-in container used at the school to collect pop cans for recycling. volunteered to help stack newspapers at the recycling depot when it becomes a reality. Club members have been making presentations to other classes in the school encouraging everybody to reduce, reuse and recycle. A plastic garbage container, with a single hole in its lid, is used to collect pop cans for recycling. When enough cans have been collected they are transported to Thunder Bay. Club members area also working with all of the students promoting the idea of a garbageless lunch. Ideally the students would bring their lunch in a reusable bag and, rather than wrap their food in plastic it would be placed in reusable air tight-containers. The Club is now focusing on an environmental awareness program that will last for three weeks beginning April 21, and will include Spring clean-up activities. Students and teachers in each division at the school will be involved with classroom projects that deal with the environment during this time. The project will also include working with Pitch - In Ontario, -an annual clean-up campaign, and the Ministry of Natural Resources. This year the focus will be on cleaning up the creek in Schreiber and helping the MNR to create spawning beds there. The students will also be helping the MNR plant trees, -create owl's nests and build brush piles for animal habitat in Rainbow Park. Heather Vandergraff, of Heathercraft, presented Clayton Cooper, Dale Mosley and Eric Vandergraff of the Grade Eight class at the Terrace Bay Public School with a cheque for $144. The students sold red Terrace Bay Public School T- Shirts produced by Heathercraft to earn the money. It will be used to help finance the class trip to Toronto in June. Immunization required after the first birthday Continued from page 1 The Immunization of School Pupils Act, 1982, requires that immunization for MMR be given after the first birthday . Children who have received the MMR vaccine prior to one year are not considered as having the prescribed program of immunization, Salonen said in the release. Parents of children in this situation have the following options: * Repeat the MMR and supply the Health Unit with the dates and the name of the doctor administering it. * Provide the results of a blood test which indicates immunity to Measles, Mumps and Rubella.
