Suddenly, a cat runs across the street. Before you know what has happened, your dog has bolted after the cat and is hit by a car. This is a situation that could happen to anyone, but how you handle it could mean life or death for your pet. Any animal that is hit by a car is considered an emergency patient. First remember to stay calm. Your pet can pick up on your feelings, so you must stay calm and speak soothingly. Let him assume the most com- fortable position, he will adopt the one of least pain. Don't force him to lie down, it may make breathing more difficult. Check to see' that his airway is open, clear his mouth and pull out his tongue to keep his airway clear of sccre- tions. With as little movement as possible check him for open and bleeding wounds. Place a pressure bandage over the wound. Have someone stay with your pet while you get a vehicle to transport him. Call your vet immediately to inform him of the accident. This is not a situation that you can handle yoursclf. Place your dog on a flat board or in a blanket if the board is not available. Gently lift him into the car. Have someone drive while you comfort the animal. Bring extra blankets in case the animal goes into shock. Do not attempt to feel for broken bones since you might do more harm than good. Many veterinary hospitals have a 24-hour emergency num- ber. If you do not have an emer- gency number, make a point of getting it soon. Never take your pet to an unqualified person.
