Winnie Campbell Citizen of the Year By Norah McGuire Schreiber's own Winnie Campbell, a contributor to the Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, has been named Citizen of the Year. Mrs. Campbell attended a Christmas Party in Schreiber and was presented with a suitably engraved silver tray by Reeve Mike Cosgrove. Mrs. Campbell, who celebrat- ed her 84th birthday just recently, first came to Schreiber with her parents from Derby, England, at the age of 10, and has lived here since, with the exception of a few years she spent in Jackfish where her husband was employed by CP Rail. Mrs. Campbell raised a family of seven; three boys and four girls, and she-now boasts of her 24 grandchildren and 19 great- grandchildren. She still maintains her two- storey, seven-room home in Schreiber. On her daily trips around town, she may stop and visit her 95-year-old friend Mr. O'Connor and do a_ favour or two for her, pick up the mail for other seniors before going to the senior citi- zens' Chimo Club for a cup of coffee and a bit of chit chat or a game of cards. If the weather is nasty, she may hail a ride with friends, but most of the time she can be seen walking the five or six blocks to the club from her home. Over the years, Mrs. Campbell has been very active as president of the Catholic Women's League, Women's Institute, Cancer Society, and the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion. Now that she is a senior, she's still active in the Chimo Club and manages to sell at least 100 home bingo cards for the club. According to her daughter, Mrs. Helen Leblanc, she can also be found selling tickets for others who may need help in ticket sales, and in September, she was out canvassing door-to-door for the Arthritis Society. Mrs. Campbell also manages to keep track of her family's birthdays and anniversaries and sends cards for all occasions to them and dozens of friends, During Christmas, Mrs. Campbell made Christmas cakes, mince tarts and puddings, and shared them with her family and friends. This sharing goes on all year too, just because she feels like yy® Local Moderator: Ed Taylor Presenters: "Ay Get the FACTS Thursday, February 4, 1988 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Recreation Complex - Main Hall (Schreiber ) Video, panel presentation & question -answer period All WELCOME! - Vice Principal - Lake Superior High School Dr. Sam Graham - Medical Officer of Health "LBD aL. Winnie Campbell- Citizen of the Year doing a good turn for someone else. When this remarkable woman was asked the differences she saw in the way people celebrate Christmas now, as compared with years ago, she said she couldn't remember anything in particular, except for the years she and her husband spent Christmas in New Zealand with their daughter. ' When she saw Santa dressed in his suit, she wondered how he could survive the 100-degrees Fahrenheit heat; she also mar- velled at going for a picnic on the beach at Christmas time. Hats off to our Citizen of the Year, Mrs. Winnie Campbell; and may she have many more years to enjoy spreading her love of life to young and old.
