Page 12, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, November 30, 1983 Manitouwadge - Hemlo UPDATE The following infor- mation has. been made available concerning Manitouwadge and the Hemlo development. Housing: Noranda Mines, Hem- lo Division, is presently constructing twenty-six houses. A private de- veloper, New Horizon Development Corp. of Timmins, has purchas- ed eleven lots and is scheduled to begin de= velopment either this fall or early next spring. A number of other houses are being con- structed on a one or two per developer basis. At this writing, there are seven serviced lots for sale. On November 17th the Township re- vealed its plans for a 200-300 lot develop- ment in the northwest section. of the commun- ity and a 125-175 lot de- velopment in the south- west section of Mani- touwadge. Clearing will begin this winter on these sites; water-sewer street development will begin as soon as the snow leaves. A third site to the east of town will be looked at next spring. Trailer-Lots: To date thirty-eight trailer sites have been completely serviced; a number of these lots are available for rent now. The balance of the area designated for trail- er development has al- ready been filled, the necessary equipment on site, and the lots will be serviced as the need requires in 1984. Apartments: Work is progressing on the renovations to the Lac Minerals apart- ments and to date a number of these apart- ments are being occu- pied by Lac Explora- tion employees. There is a definite shortage of apartments for general public rent- al but land is now avail- able for this type of de- velopment, should an individual wish to take advantage of this. Within the next month or so, an an- nouncement on apart- ment construction pro- jects will be forthcom- ing. Commercial-Industrial: The township is pleas- ed to welcome Cow Pa- lace Stores to their com- mercial area. It is their understanding that there are a number of other businesses nego- tiating with some local building owners for the purpose of locating in Manitouwadge. When more definite news is received on this matter, the public will be in- formed of such. The township is also pleased to welcome the following to the indus- trial area: Cochrane- Dunlop, Algoma Elec- trical Dist., Paul Dal- laire Welding and Body Fabrication. About twenty-five ad- ditional firms have shown interest in locat- ing in Manitouwadge and they expect that by the year's end, all the industrial lots will have been filled. They are now in the process of reviewing the industrial area for the purpose of expansion. Airport: Construction is well underway for the com- pletion of the Airport for Manitouwadge and the date for this comple- tion was set at Novem- ber 30th, with paving to be completed in 1984. Recently a meeting was held with Austin Airways regarding their application for ser- vice (twice daily) be- tween Thunder Bay - Manitouwadge - Tim- mins. It is hoped by the township that this appli- cation will be approved . by March or April of 1984. | They also have . had contact with Bear Skin Airways, and have had considerable contact re- garding NorOnt Air Ser- vice. The Airport will provide considerable op- portunities for commer- cial and industrial con- cerns in' the Manitou- wadge - Hemlo area. Motel-Hotel: There is a local group studying the possibility of constructing a motel operation. There is prime land available for sale for this purpose. With all of the activity locally, they are convin- ced that someone would be "missing the boat" so to speak, regarding ' this great opportunity. At the present time, the township has com- missioned two feasibility studies regarding the downtown area. These include (a) potential for retail development and . Spiritual Directors Father McKie from Marathon's Holy | Sa- 'vior Church and Father Pottie of St. Martin of Tours were present. The importance of a Regional Tour is that we must always try to com- municate with each other; that Presidents must know about and act upon the Recommenda- tions and challenges from the Provincial and National levels of the League. Father Ken- nedy stressed knowing God in our own lives and to continue our work in regards to the subject of abortion and the sanctity of human life from in- fancy to adult life. Workshops were given by Diocesan Convenors on Organization, Christ- ian Family Life and Community Life. We have 4,000 CWL mem- bers in our Diocese. Short reports were given by Parish Counc- il Presidents, high- lighting the work their Councils are doing for God and Canada. Father McKie spoke about making a Pilgrim- age to Schreiber '*MECCA"'; the -Pil- grimage Church for the Holy Year Holy An- gels. Father Pottie thanked all the ladies for bring- ing Jesus into their fa- milies and communi- ties. He told us we are being called to evangel- ize through the league.
