OCTOBER 14, 1976 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE . 5 SCHOOL NEWS: Cont'd from page 3.... was how the two towns are so highway orienta- ted. They found that both the Trans Canada Highway and the C.P. Railway are the only means of transportation that joins the towns with any other communities. The highway was found to be located in the only place possible. The students observed that the highway winds and curves around the low cut mountains, large and small lakes, and deep cut rivers. The area around these two towns has the terrain typical of the rough and rocky terrain of the Canadian Sheild, which is the physical region in which our towns are situated. Even the towns were found to be located in the only places possib- le. Schreiber was observed to be located in a valley glacial spillway surrounded by mountains and Terrace Bay is located on terraces, which were formed from the different elevations of gj the lake shore of Lake Superior. : " The students also found that our area is densely covered with natural vegetation. The rolling low cut hills once around 10,000 ft. in elevation found to be densely covered with trees and shrubs. One outstanding feature of these hills was the fact that on top of some of the hills ponds and small lakes were situa- ted. The area west of Schreiber was found to 'be relatively rocky as compared with the area east of Schreiber which was much flatter. The students concluded that our area was created during the last period of glaciation (Wiscon- sin) which had covered this entire region. Many other interesting observations were also discovered during the flight which will be included in a major report written by each stu -dent. The students felt that the trip was ..- quite exciting and opened their eyes to some very different aspects of their surroundings.
