W.E.CAVANAUGH PRESENTS BRIEF Speaking in favour of the Brief pre- sented by the Chamber of Commerce to the Board of Transport Commissioners at Port Arthur on October 27th protes- ting removal of the Canadian Pacific Dominion passenger train with the ex- press and mail services, Mr.W.E. Cavanaugh, representing the Chamber SZ THE NEWS Shell Oil x OC ee ge STO November 4, 1965 QUALITY IS NOT BY CHANCE Drycleaners to the North Shore Ph.-155 and Township Council, noted that it was unbeliev- able in our society of 1965 that the Canadian people had to rise in wrath to maintain our standard of liv- ing. He pointed out that isolated as we are, 700 miles from Toronto and Winnipeg, and farther from Montreal, the centres from which we receive our vita machine parts and our medicines and drugs, on which we used to get a 24 hour delivery, now takes from four to five days and will likely be much worse dur- ing the long winters. In speaking of passenger services he related that the Canadian came through Terrace Bay at 12.25 a.m. and if a person could get reservations on this train, there was nobody on duty and the station was locked and in darkness so you sit in somebody's car and wait. If you take taxies you stand and wait in the cold darkness for as much as an hour and this train is running later each week. Mr .Cavanaugh told the Commission that the Can- adian Pacific Railway took in freight revenue out of Terrace Bay each year over the 3 million dollar mark He noted that all of our 2,000 citizens contributed to this business and asked if it was too much to ex- pect the Railway to consider the inconveniences the removal of the Dominion causes this community. He also noted that, in reply to the Township's telegram of protest the CPR replied that they needed the diesel units used on the Dominion to fulfill com- mitments to the Wheat Board and asked if it was reasonable to expect a thriv- ing young community to suffer a severe set back in its standard of living be- cause the CPR did not provide for emergency business. In closing his presentation Mr .Cava- naugh said that the citizens of Terrace Bay demand--first that the Government of Canada request, with sufficient force, the Canadian Pacific Railway restore the Dominion with expréss and mail service, even if subsidy were necessary or second - Run a Canadian National passenger train over the CPR line with Dealer these services.
