---- 7 Angela Angela Burgess, a Russell resi- dent since September, 1979, con- ducted a Creative Dance Pro- gramm at the Community Centre on Saturday mornings from last October to June 1980. Angela's love for the dance in- cludes classical and jazz ballet and acrobatics. Her years of formal training and experience as a teacher entitle her to dual membership in the Canadian and American Dance Teachers' Associations. And what a vivid backlog of memories she has as a performer. Programs on Parliament Hill for the 1967 Centennial, Tulip Dances for Spring Awakening Festivals, T.V. numbers; kicking and screaming through Cancan routines and slipping on a polish- ed floor in the Museum of Man to recover her balance without miss- ing a beat. All moments to remember and share with students growing up with the same love for dance in all its varied forms. Although most little girls who have taken dance, acrobatics or gymnastics lessons dream of the big time, Mrs. Burgess never entertained professional designs. Her height as a teenager was against her and she soon accepted it as a fact of life. Whereas most ballerinas measure between 5'3"' and 5'5", she stands 5'8 1/2"'. Instead of joining .a profes- sional company after the usual years of formal lessons, Mrs. urgess -- ; The dance is everything Burgess continued teaching at the school where she had begun her training. When she was four years old she registered at the Ingrid Bolf School in Ottawa mostly at her own insistence because a playmate had begun lessons there. By the time she was 10 her training included acrobatics and the Chec- ceti method of classical ballet. When she turned 13 Angela began studying jazz ballet which brought her lessons to seven hours a week. Her ongoing training:as a stu- dent and her initiation into teaching pre-beginners at the age of 14 brought the rewards of scholarships. Still in her mid-teens she turned to her first assignment as a choreographer for Im- maculata High School's produc- tion of Finian's Rainbow. After 12 years of teaching at the Bolf School of Dance, Mrs. Burgess branched out on her own. Over a period of three years when she ran her own program in Ot- tawa her classes averaged 60 students annually. | Upgrading her dancing skills is now more difficult for the mother of three children. Dancing cannot occupy all her time but it remains a deep part of it. As a teacher her satisfaction ex- pands with her students' growing confidence. As a performer she drawa energy and exhileration from performing alone and with her students during recitals. The company of her youngest students she finds particularly enjoyable. Because three year olds are remarkably supple, they can be shown some movement and repeat it effortlessly. But as soon as one year later, many children have already become conscious of their audiences and their bodies Have begun the stiffening up process. She sees her Creative Dance Program as an opportunity for corporal movement and free ex- pression. Her classes are helpful to any child who needs an outlet for energy. And, if by some chance a boy or girl shows real promise as a professional, Mrs. Burgess can direct them to a pro- ven teacher in an academy. With only 18 students registered during the Winter/Spring classes at $36 a term, Angela's initial Creative Dance Program in our community managed to -- break even. As fall arrives and our children register for various activities at school and at the R.A., Mrs. . Burgess will be offering her Creative Dance again for one hour a week. Under her tutelage our younger children are provided with a physical outlet and our older ones with some training in flexibility and grace.
