Girl Guides Guiding is going along strongly this year with a company of 29 girls. Dances have become part of our Guide activities with three dances having taken place to date. Our swim nights have changed location from Nepean to Saw Mill Creek with a different "MacDonald's" but still "Mac- Donald's". The Girls are working on various badges but the prime one is the snowshoe badge. Unfortun- ately, we always have more girls than snowshoes. Does anyone have snowshoes they would be willing to lend out on Thursday nights? Again our plea to the commun- ity. Assistant Guide Leaders are urgently needed. Guiding has changed drastically over the past few years. Today the Guides decide what they want and don't want in their programme. They often plan and carry out their own activities, (ie. dances) and Senior Guides teach the others their skills. The leader's role is to schedule the things they want to do into a programme and to assist them in carrying it out in whatever ways she can. Experience and abilities are nice extras if you have them, but not important. What is important is being interested and willing to give a little of yourself and your time to make Guides a success for 29 Russell girls. For further inform- ation please call Mrs. 445-5711. Editor's Comment... Noiseless Nights thanks to Council Township council is to be commended for confining snow removal to more popular hours this year. While there have been at least three of the severest snow- storms in recent memory this year, the resulting accumulation has been cleared from village streets outside of normal sleeping hours. This can only be looked at as a progressive step whether it was a conscious move on council's part or simply the result of circumstance. Last year, many residents spent sleepless nights listening to the roar of heavy snow removal machinery. Men and equipment would move in at 5 a.m., leaving an hour or two later shortly before alarm clocks were to rattle residents to wakefulness any- way. Returning to sleep was hardly worthwhile. It was an unhappy arrange- ment. What with 24 hours in a day, why wait until the wee hours for the noisy job of removing snow? The work was never done the same day as a snowstorm and was therefore of no benefit to residents coming and going from the village anyway. It's main purpose is to remove banks to make room to plow the next snowfall. By having it done at night, council was trying the patience of even the most easygoing residents. Perhaps the new council has realized this. By choosing more popular hours, council is able to have the snow removed with the least amount of inconvenience to residents. It certainly can't be any more costly to do the work during the day or evening rather than in the middle of the night. Even if it is, the few extra dollars are worth a sound night's sleep. So, council, congratulations for being sensitive to the well-being of residents. As many former councillors can attest, irritated, sleepless residents have a way of making their feelings known at election time. Pleasant dreams. News The week of February 14-18 was Carnival Week at Osgoode High with one of the best carnivals ever. Monday was Red and White Day. It also was Record breaking Day. In the afternoon a student-teacher hock- ey game was played in the Metcalfe Arena. Tuesday was Farmer Day with a _ dance featuring Chateaux in the even- ing. Wednesday was a Profes- sional Development Day. A Ski Trip to Vorlage was | very successful with about 75 people heading to the slopes for the day. Thursday was Dress-up Day and Friday was Greaser Day with a dance in the afternoon with Earl of Duke providing the entertainment. On April 20, 1977 at O.T.H.S., Osgoode will have an afternoon of great disco music when C.F:2R.A. 58 makes their annual trip to our school. Admission to the dance for all the students will be 50c with the proceeds going to the Graduation Committee, who is trying to raise money for their Graduation Exercises to be held at the end of June.
