McEvoy open champ By Garey Ris Eldon McEvoy won the Second Annual Russell Golf Tournament held at the Metcalfe Golf Course August 17th with a low gross score of 85. Castor Review Sports Editor Jack McLaren presented the trophy to McEvoy. Harry Donner carded an 86 and Norn Inglis came in with an 87. Last year's victor, Claude Cousineau finished with an 89. The Erik Therkelsen Trophy was awarded to Colin Rowan who fired a 76.5 in the low net category. Mel Graham shot a 77 for second place and Jim Sheehan finished in third spot with a score Of 21,5. Barry McVey won for the , longest drive on the third hole. Don Garvey was closest to the pin ' on the eighth hole and Fern Berube was the most honest golfer. Clinton McEvoy was another winner for dropping his golf ball in the hidden hole on the ' sixth hole. 91 local golfers participated in this year's tournament which is almost double the number of Russell Minor Hockey News By Barry Carscadden Fall is upon us and once again our thoughts are turning to Minor Hockey. But needless to say our Executive has already spent many hours organizing for the upcom- ing season. Registration is over and we will probably be hearing complaints about the $50 registra- tion fee, but please don't forget that it will cost over $100 to put your son through Minor Hockey this season. The Executive, through various fund raising events, will have to raise the re- mainder of the money and we are hoping to get parent support in these endeavours. We are still looking for coaches and convenors so please contact the Secretary Emerald Miller at 445-5362 as soon as possible. " The first hockey hours will be . on Oct. 3rd. All boys who have registered will be contacted prior to this date. -RISRAP" With Garey Ris I just can't understand it. The Toronto Argonauts of the Canadianl Football League who began the season so optimistically have once again started their annual nosedive into the basement of the CFL Eastern Division. Not to worry yet, though. With six games to go, the Argos still have a chance at a playoff spot. Quarterback Tony Adams has returned after recovering from a separated shoulder suffered earlier in the season. Mark Jackson looked exceptionally good in the early goings but has lost some of his accuracy he showed in the first five games and the Argos have lost four games in a row and have tumbled from.a share of first place to a share of last place. Some changes are necessary but head coach Willie Wood deserves at least two years to turn the fortunes of the Argos around. Now is the time to "pull together' before they sink to the bottom of the league. ip SOF Mei 9 2 ee oe oe oe Brigitte Reid, Russell's high jump specialist has been selected as part of the Canadian track and field team which will compete in two interna- tional competitions in mid-September in Japan. One of the meets is slated for Sept. 20 in Tokyo including nine nations and nine world record-holders and 16 Moscow Olympic gold medallists. The nine nations include Canada, the United States, Soviet Union and \West Germany. : : ' 53, 97 urn Metcalfe Figure Skating News,;2.co. Russell's Barry McVey eyes this putt on 18 at the second annual Russell Open Golf Tournament. Barry would like to have that one back because as every golfer knows there are some balls that just shy away from the hole. This one rolled just wide. (Garey Ris photo) display of outrage, he demolished his putter over the back of his golf cart after he missed an easy putt of less than two feet on the ninth hole. He has recently bought a new set of golf clubs but no one knows how long they will last. The tournament ended with a chicken dinner, refreshments and the awarding of prizes. Many thanks to Jack Tyo, Gord Saunders, Jim Sullivan, Gerry O'Reilley and Barry McVey for a job well done. Work has already begun on next year's tournament at the Metcalfe Golf Course. Kinnaird Community Centre wat- ching the Russell Raiders and Russell Warriors Intermediate hockey teams in action. The up- coming season will see only the Warriors in action, likely every Friday evening. The Raider executive has decid- ed to discontinue operations. A change in league rules plus a lack of fan support weighed heavily in the decision. Just a few years ago fans filled the arena on Friday evenings to watch the Raiders but last season fan support consisted primarily of players' girlfriends or wives. Lack of support was pro- bably due in part to the fact that the team was comprised of out-of- _ town players, an unfortunate cir- cumstance made necessary by the high calibre of the South-Carleton league. The Warrior team, on the other hand, is made up of local boys, which has a higher appeal to area fans. They plan to switch their home games from Sunday after- noon to Friday evenings which should help attendance even more. Team tryouts are scheduled to begin the end of September. Before the skating season gets underway they will be involved in d raising events. The first of these will take place during the Metcalfe Fair on 3, 4, and 5 October where they will be operating a Craft Booth. This willbe an excellent opportunity for area people to begin their Christmas shopping. As well Club crests will be on sale for $2.00. Area skaters are reminded that registration will take place on Sept. 16 and 18 from 7 - 8:30 at the Metcalfe Community Centre.
