Page 2 Friday, June 18, 1976 Public School News At the recent track and field meet held at Metcalfe Public School, Russell's senior team finished in the top two(total results aren't available yet). There were teams from six schools participating. The junior division didn't do the best although the seniors walked away with many ribbons. The Grade Eights spent June 9 and 10 in Niagara Falls. They visited the Marineland and Game Farm where they saw a show put on be two killer whales, many museums including the Ripley's Believe-it-or-not and the Madame Tussaud's Wax Museums. The real thriller was of course the Falls itself. We saw both the American Falls and the huge Canadian Horseshoe Falls from the banks of the Niagara River, the tunnels which go under the Horseshoe and the Maid of the Mist boat which goes into the Falls. The trip was appreciated by all and we would like to thank the people who supported us and helped in the fund raising. St-Joseph School News Russell Separate School par- ticipated in Rockland for a track and field meet on June 8. All schools participating represented a country. We represented the "Netherlands", therefore two pupils were dressed in Dutch costumes. We came back with two silver medals. Lorraine Thibault, 200 meters and Francois Thibault, obstacle course, 100 meters, were the winners. We were pleased with the results, but next time we hope to come back with gold medals. Scouting News A very successful Rideau Area Camp involving over 100 scouts from Ottawa South East and the rural area was held at Fitzroy Provincial Park on the Victoria Day weekend. The purpose of the camp was to teach both Scouts and adult leaders basic skills in canoeing, backpacking and pion- eer engineering with ropes and spars. Volunteer scout leaders with acknowledged skills in these areas acted as instructors and a good weekend was enjoyed by all. A special vote of thanks to those parents who helped transport boys and equipment from home to camp and back again. Also thanks to members of the Russell Venturer Company who cut wood, stood beach guard duty over more than twelve borrowed canoes and helped with the beginner canoeists. Scouting winds up on the weekend of June 19 -- 20 witha one night camp-out at the Castor River campsite. This is good for it always seems that it is the things we do at camp that are the things we remember best. O.T.H.S.
