- Notes
- SS Modjeska was acquired by Owen Sound Transportation Co. in 1926. Formerly used as a day steamer for short trips on Lake Ontario, staterooms and cabins were installed by OSTC and renamed Manitoulin. It ran on a twice a week schedule from Owen Sound to the Soo with stops along the North Channel route and Mackinac Island. In 1936 when the services of OSTC and Dominion Transportation Co. (with SS Caribou and SS Manitou) were combined, its route was altered to include Michipcoten on Lake Superior. The SS Manitou was often called upon to assist the MS Normac on the popular Tobermory-Manitoulin automobile ferry route. The Manitou was retired in 1945 and was replaced by the SS Norisle built specifically for car ferry route. The SS Manitoulin was retired in 1949 and in 1950 the SS Norgoma was built to replace it. The Norgoma was designed as a package freighter and passenger steamer. Highway improvements led to the demise of this service and the conversion of the Norgoma from steam to diesel increased its autombile capacity and it was placed on the Tobermory ferry route now provided by the MS Chi-Cheemaun.
