"Page 3, Tuesday, Sept. 22° 1992 Pilot project extended to include North Shore by Darren MacDonald Staff A pilot project that allows American tourists to enter remote areas in northwestern Ontario without travelling to Thunder Bay first has been extended to include the North - service." Bélair, along with several North Shore groups, has been lobbying the government to have the service expanded to include this area. "To be honest with you, we all found out through a pam- phlet," says Cochrane - Superi- or MP Rég Bélair. "(Revenue Minister Otto Jelinek) never bothered to either inform me, or the tourism committees on the North Shore about this new end in March of 1993, but Bélair is lobbying the minister to make the project permanent. "They cannot be so near- sighted as not to realize that the service is appreciated," he says. "(The government) knows very well that the service encourages tourists to visit the area." Whitesand River project tackles erosion along Lakeshore Road by Darren MacDonald . Staff The Ministry of Transporta- tion of Ontario has completed a project aimed at preventing the erosion of Lakeshore Road, which is west of Schreiber. Because of heavy amounts of rainfall, the Whitesand River has been spilling into a channel that runs parallel to the road, causing the erosion. "That has caused problems over the past few years," says Ministry of Natural Resources spokesperson Greg Pawson. The MNR monitored the work. Hot news tip? To correct the problem Paw- son says a wall made up of large, angular rock was built to help maintain the river banks when the river level rises. Below the rock wall, a "geo- textile" layer was placed to prevent silt from running through the rocks. The geotextile layer is made up of polyester-twined material weaved back and forth to make a bonded sheet. "Now that the bank has been re-enforced, during high water levels the river hits the angular rocks and bounces back into the river rather than into the road," says Pawson. Work started Aug. 4, and took about a week to complete. About 65 feet of embankment along the Whitesand River was re-enforced with the angular rocks.
