We have no windows and you can believe this reporter that - those T.V. ads to the contrary - flashlight batteries just don't light up a light table worth a darn. So - the staff sat - walked around - went for coffee and waited for three hours then gave up and went home to come back in the evening and get on with the job! South could have bid two spades but this would be a weak bid show- ing 13 to 16 points and a bid of two no trump could be inserted but it runs the danger of a weak club suit. North could bid three no trump after three diamonds but chooses to support partner's spades and South carries on to game. West has a difficult hand to open the play and he chooses to lead a spade to protect the possible winners in the other three suits. A spade lead would hurt declarer if spades were 4-4 but as they are 5-3 it becomes a hindrance but not a bother. South wins in his own hand and leads the heart three to dummy. East Pass Pass Pass . The play of the ace would leave declarer with two sluffs on the K-Q of hearts but not playing the ace would give declarer a safe trick in hearts. The lead of the heart three is actually a finesse for the ace. Whatever course West takes, the hand will make five. If he takes his ace, declarer wins the return, draws trumps, and sluffs two low dia- monds on the good hearts. If he refuses to take the ace, declarer plays three rounds of diamonds, ruffing once on the board and concedes two dia- mond losers.
