PORTLAND THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION Elgin-Portland Branch # 201 ________________________.__________ The Bingo Jackpot of $225. was won on July 25th by Mrs. Amelia McKinney who in turn donated $25. to the branch's coffers with many thanks from the branch members. The secretary of Branch 231 also is Deputy Zone Commander of G-2 Comrade Linton McConville with 2nd Vice of Branch 231 Comrade Floris Bakker atâ€" tended the sesquicentennial celebration in Pembroke on Aug. 6th and 7th. Pem- broke Branch#72 supplied a Band Concert on Sunday afternoon with a steak barbe- cue and a dance from 4 o'clock on. Over 750 steaks were consumed. On Monday at 1 PM, Legion members from other branches joined Branch # 72 Pemâ€" broke in their Unity Day celebrations under the slogan one Legion â€" one Cana- da. There were over 20 branches repre- sented in the parade and wreath laying ceremonies at the cenotaph who were lead on parade by many distinguished legionaires and gentlemen, to name a few, the Honourable Postmaster General, Gilles Lamontagne of Canada - Comrade Gaston Garceau Vice-President of Domi- nion Command, Comrade Larry Keene, 2nd viceâ€"president of the Ontario Command and M.P.s from both Provincial and Fe- deral cabinets for the district. As usual the Ladies Auxiliary of Pembroke Branch # 72 outdid themselves with their services at the steak barbecue plus a brunch and a sit down dinner Monday afternoon. The executive of Elginâ€"Portland Branch 231 hope all mem- bers have enjoyed the summer recess but remind everyone the holidays are over as of September 7th with some guests in attendance with installation of officers. Also reminding everyone that the Branch Annual Harvest Ball is to be held in Portland Community Hall on Sept. 30th, (Sat.) with Gary Allen's Band in atten- dance. Mrs. Marjorie Emmons of Smiths Falls, a life member of the group, delivered a very impressive worship service. Mrs. Leo Wykes was in charge of music and singing duets were sung by Mrs. Wykes and her father; her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ronald Eaton, & Rev. & Mrs. Grant Richardson followed by a sing- song of favourite hymns accompanied by Mrs. Glen Chant at the piano. , The president thanked the staff for _.. _ '9 the opportunity of Visiting the lodge ‘ ' and the afternoon of worship singing and fellowship. Rev. Richardson closed the meeting with prayer. Refreshments were served by the staff and U.C.W. members including a birthday cake made by Mrs. Leo Wykes. Mrs. Hurley conducted a tour of the lodge and its new sunroom and demons- trated some new eguipment.
