Notes
Mary (Paul) Demery Home, 21 Bay Street.

At the end of Mary Street, where it becomes what was known as Bay Street, was this large home which appears to have originally been built by John Croswell jr. and his wife Susannah (Hammond). At the time of the 1891 and 1901 censuses, John and Susannah and family lived in this 7 (or 9) room home.

In 1903 John Croswell transferred lots 20 and 21 and the large home above to William Edward Smith. In 1908 William Smith sold lots 20 and 21 to Frederick French.
Immediately to the east of this home, on Lots 18 and 19 Bay Street was a small 2 room frame home which at the turn of the century was owned and occupied by Frederick French and family. These lots had been conveyed to Frederick French in 1903 by John Croswell. Despite the dates of these transactions, Frederick French is identified as living on Bay Street in the 1901 census together with five of his children, including daughters Melissa and Ethel.
At the time of the 1911 census, Frederick had moved to the large home (above) on Lot 21 and lived there with his son-in-law and daughter Francis and Ethel (French) Gorham.
Frederick French moved to western Canada where he died in 1918. In his will, he left lots 20 and 21 and the home which he and his son-in-law and daughter lived, to his daughter Ethel (French) Gorham who at that time had also moved west to Simpson, Saskatchewan.
Between 1921 and the 1950’s, Mary (Paul) Demery, a cousin of Ethel (French) Gorham occupied the above home which became known as the Demery home. After Mary Demery vacated the home, the property reverted to the Crown.
