- Notes
- Lot 1 on the north side of Ahmic Street was sold by John Croswell to John Lang in 1900 for $30. Given the price, it is likely that this rather unusual looking home was built by James Lang. John James Lang married Emma Jane Stanyer, daughter of William and Emma (Taylor) Stanyer September 8, 1897 in Ahmic Harbour. At the time of the 1901 census, James and Emma Lang and family lived in the home.
In 1903 the property transferred to William Murdock Robertson, who, in 1905 sold to Susan Farquhar from Maple Island. It appears likely that William Murdock Robertson ran the store on Lot 5 on the south side of Ahmic Street for his father William Robertson who, at the time, continued to operate the family store in Dunchurch. Susan Farquhar was the daughter of Adam and Catherine Farquhar and stepdaughter of Susannah (McLennan) Farquhar. At some point the property appears to have transferred to Margaret Etta Johnson who, at the time of the 1911 census was a widow living on the property. Margaret Etta Johnson was the widow of Cornelius Johnson. Cornelius and Margaret Johnson had previously lived on the farm of Cornelius’ brother Robert Johnson of Maple Island. Cornelius and Robert were brothers of John A. Johnson who built and operated the Cliffeburne Hotel in Ahmic Harbour; and were cousins of Walter Johnson of Dunchurch.
Between 1919 and 1923 the property was owned by David Bell and subsequently Earl Moulton. In 1923, Earl Moulton transferred the property to Caroline (Croswell) Paul. It is as the Caroline Paul home that the property is best remembered. Caroline died, April, 1936. Jean (Demery) and George Wager then lived in the home for a number of years before moving to their Queen St. location. In the late 1940’s, Paul Demery, a grandson of Caroline Croswell paid the taxes on the property.
