- Description
- This is the earliest known picture looking east along Ahmic Street. It was taken around the turn of the last century. The picture is taken from the upper level of the store on Lot 5 on the south side of Ahmic Street which at the time was owned by the Robertson family. The home on the right side of the picture belonged to Sam Ritter and family. At the time of this picture, William and Isabella Kennedy and family lived in the brick home at the left of the picture (on the northwest corner of Ahmic and John Streets). The frame home, centre left, was originally owned by Samuel Calvert. At the time of the 1901 census, and probably at the time of this picture, the home was occupied by James and Ada (Cole) McCrindle and their daughter Iverna. Ada (Cole) McCrindle was a sister of Lucy Ida (Cole) Johnson who together with her husband John A. Johnson built the Cliffeburne Hotel. In 1908, Lillie (Croswell) Kennedy purchased the home. The Charles and Phoebe Croswell boarding house is barely visible through the trees centre right in the picture. Visible, but faintly at the end of the street are the Jules Brown general store and the Cliffeburne hotel.
