- Notes
- In the centre of this picture is the new 32 room brick Cliffeburne Hotel, built in 1892 by John A. and Lucy Ida (Cole) Johnson (variously spelled Johnston). Based upon the accounts of Reverend Walker: “When the new hotel was erected at the harbour it became a great summer resort, and the following tourist season about sixty Americans were holidaying there for some time. Among them was one man, who, together with his family, represented the cream of United States society…”. To the left of the hotel is the general store, now rebuilt and clad in Croswell brick. At the time of this picture it was likely already under the ownership of Jules Brown and his early partner Edmund Clavis (variously spelled Clavir).
The boat in the picture is the Wenonah built in 1886 at Katrine. It was over 94 feet long, 18 feet wide and weighed 93 tons. It was a side wheel and propeller powered steam boat. The Wenonah’s construction coincided with the completion of the locks at Magnetawan and immediately the Wenonah began regular trips from Burks Falls to Ahmic Harbour. In this picture, the Wenonah is moored at the docks and storage sheds built on the property that the Muskoka and Nippissing Navigation Company had purchased from John and Mary Ann Croswell in 1887. In 1905, Block B and the docks and warehouses were transferred to Robert Watson who owned the Wenonah. In 1908, the year that the Wenonah burned, the property transferred to Albert Agar who owned: the Wanita (formerly the Cyclone built in Ahmic Harbour in 1896); the Theresa built in 1900; and later, the Glenada originally built 1904; and the Gravenhurst originally built in 1902 in Gravenhurst (came to the Magnetawan River in 1910)
