- Notes
- This is the earliest known picture of Ahmic Harbour. It was provided by the Welliver family whose ancestors first travelled to the area as summer tourists in the late 1880’s or early 1890’s. While the date on the back of the photo is 1895, the picture probably predates the large brick Cliffeburne Hotel which was built in 1892, and the William Kennedy home, also built of brick. Telegraph lines, however, appear to be in place. In his brief visit through Ahmic Harbour in 1891 or 1892, Reverend Walker wrote: “Soon we were in sight of Ahmic Harbour, a neat-looking place with a nice new frame church, that cost in the neighbourhood of $1,000. Also the village contained an hotel (which was soon to give place to a very large one, veneered in brick, costing several thousands of dollars), a blacksmith’s shop, a carpenter and paint shop and several private dwellings, one or two of them being tastily built.” The above picture is probably the exact sight that greeted Reverend Walker in 1891 or early
