- Walter Hoskins Harper (1807-1847) was a native of Cornwall, England and his wife, Elizabeth Allman (1814-1894), a native of Devonshire. The couple were married in 1834 at Whitby Township. They had six children: Ann, Major, Margaret, Joseph James, Richard, and Mary Ann.
Major Harper (1835-1917) married Emeline Pierson (1837-1907) in 1856 and they had eight children: Walter, Irvil, Luella, Minnie (1860-1875), Nellie (1863-1947), Charles Ernest (1867-1944), Bessie (1868-1915), and Mack (1870-1884).
Major Harper was a carpenter and machinist. He was first appointed to Council in 1868 and was later elected Mayor of Whitby. As mayor, he was appointed Police Magistrate for Whitby in 1881. - Date of Original
