- The King family immigrated to North America from Zwiroticz, Bohemia (now Czech Republic). Brothers Charles and Joseph came to Whitby in 1863 where they leased and later purchased the Burns tannery which became known as the King Bros. Tannery. In 1883 the partnership dissolved and Joseph and family went to Toronto where he established a wholesale leather and shoe findings business. [Source: Whitby Chronicle, 22 June 1883]
Joseph King (1835-1930) married Recha (Rachel) Heumann (1847-1934) in New York City in 1870. They had five children.
Charles King (1837-1915) married Henriette Kohn in Chicago in 1866. They had nine children. Charles was very active in Whitby and Ontario County politics, entering the town council as alderman for the Centre Ward in 1872, attaining the position of deputy-reeve and reeve, and serving as the Warden for the County of Ontario in 1897. He also served for many years on the local Board of Education, and in his later years, on the Whitby Board of Trade. In 1906, upon retirement from the King Bros. Tannery, he settled in Toronto. - Date of Original
