The William Dow (1777-1855) family settled at Whitby Township in 1833 after having arrived in Canada from Banffshire, Scotland. They took up residence at Glen Dhu farm on Concession 3. William Dow was well known throughout Ontario for his agricultural improvements, especially in the production of great crop yields.

William Dow married Margaret Lumsden (1785-1833) in Banffshire, Scotland in 1806. They had eleven children. In 1833 he married Jane Armstrong (1787-1860), their marriage produced no children.

William Gerrard Dow (1849-1937), grandson of William and Margaret Dow and first son of John and Catherine Dow, married Annie McAllan (1843-1915) at Whitby in 1873. The had five surviving children.

Before his marriage, William Gerrard Dow moved to Manitoba in 1869 and worked on the first government survey of that area. He served as a dispatcher during the Riel Rebellion of 1885 and was captured by Louis Riel but later escaped. Following the rebellion he returned to Manitoba settling at Pilot Mound in 1889 with his family. They moved to Lilac, Saskatchewan in 1904 where he farmed until his death.
