- John Thomas was born at Carmarthen, Wales on 14 November 1885. He came to Whitby as a teenager and worked at the R.J. Flemming farm in Pickering Township and King Brothers' Tannery in Whitby before being appointed as Whitby's night watchman in April 1921. He served in that capacity until his death at the Oshawa General Hospital on 28 January 1950. He is buried at Groveside Cemetery in Brooklin. He often patrolled the downtown with his dog Sport.
