- Mrs. John Arthur Jeffrey (Adalina Lick), daughter of Jeremiah Lick, was born in East Whitby Township in 1880. She attended Oshawa and Whitby High Schools and graduated in Arts and Music from the University of Toronto. She worked as the teacher of honour mathematics and honour physics. She taught at Smithville and Cayuga High Schools until she and John Arthur Jeffrey were married on December 17, 1913. After the death of her husband in 1922, Mrs. Jeffrey taught at the Ontario Ladies' College, Whitby for seven years and for five years at Alma College, St. Thomas. She stayed with her son Alex while he attended Queen's University in Kingston and then later retired to the Lick family home (the Stone Lodge, 1635 Dundas Street East, Whitby). She became an authority on fine arts and was an expert wood carver. Through the Methodist (later United) Church, she supported a missionary in India. As well, she spent eight winters at St. Petersburg, Florida. She died at Oshawa on August 13, 1944 and is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
