He went to Greenwood in Pickering Township as farm manager for Arthur Johnston, a breeder and importer of Shorthorn cattle. In 1909 Mr. Maw went into business for himself as an auctioneer for more than 40 years. In the 1920s, he worked with John E. Disney as a farm implement agent in addition to conducting auctions. In 1920 he was elected to the Whitby Town Council, heading the poll with 1,600 votes. He was councillor again in 1921 and in 1922, ran for mayor, being defeated by Fred N. Burns by only 48 votes.
