- Gordon Douglas Hawes was born at Whitby on September 1, 1913. He was one of the early members of the Kinsmen Club of Whitby, serving as President in 1946-47, and was named the club's first life member in 1956. His career in hockey began in 1931 at the age of 18 when he was the youngest secretary of the Whitby Hockey Association. In the 1930s he was convener for the Ontario Hockey Association. Mr. Hawes was one of the founders of the Whitby Minor Hockey Association in 1943-44 and was manager of the Whitby Juvenile Hockey Team which won the Ontario Championship in 1944. He was coach and manager of many local hockey teams. In 1951 he became a convener for the Ontario Minor Hockey Association, a position he held for more than 20 years, responsible for scheduling games for more than 200 teams made up of 1,500 boys in Eastern Ontario. He assigned and trained referees for games from Toronto to Kingston. In 1955 Mr. Hawes was elected to the executive of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association, and served as President in 1968-69. He also helped to start the Lakeshore Juvenile Baseball League in the 1940s and was secretary of a softball league in the 1930s. He was president of the Whitby Men's Bowling League in the 1940s and early 1950s. Gordon Hawes died at Oshawa on August 27, 1995, and is buried at Mount Lawn Memorial Gardens, Whitby.
