Description
A black and white portrait photograph of Philip Taylor (1831-1911). Mr. Taylor is pictured in his regalia as past Preceptor of St. John the Almoner Preceptory.
Notes
Philip Taylor was born at Devonshire, England, on January 20, 1831 and settled first in Oshawa when he came to this area. He was Worshipful Master of Cedar Lodge, Oshawa, in 1873-74 and 1876 and 1879.In the 1880s he moved to Whitby where he conducted a watchmaking and jewellery shop in the north store of the Oddfellows Block on Brock Street North. He lived in the flat above the store. Mr. Taylor was Preceptor of St. John the Almoner Preceptory in Whitby in 1888-89. He was Worshipful Master of Composite Masonic Lodge in 1897 and served for a number of years after that as the lodge's treasurer. In 1911 he installed the English-made tower clock in the Whitby Post Office at Brock and Dundas Streets. He first started the clock on his 80th birthday, January 20, 1911. Mr Taylor died at Whitby on December 22, 1911 and is buried in Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
