- Notes
- George Wallace was a brother of Whitby merchant and entrepreneur, James Wallace. He was born in Scotland in 1831 and is first recorded in Whitby in 1851 as a general merchant in partnership with Thomas Wallace. He lived in a brick cottage on Byron Street south built about 1853 and was married in 1865 to Maria Elmina Warren, daughter of William Warren (customs collector at Port Whitby) and Clarissa Lynde. In 1857 George Wallace is no longer listed as living in Whitby. He died at the Provincial Lunatic Asylum (999 Queen Street) in Toronto, on July 12, 1868 a the age of 37 and is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
