- J.W. Bengough was born at Toronto on April 7, 1851 and grew up in Whitby where he worked for the Whitby Gazette as a compositor in 1870. In 1873 he moved to Toronto and published "Grip" magazine there from 1873 to 1892. A noted cartoonist, his cartoons of Sir John A. Macdonald and other politicians are well known even today. He published many books of prose, poetry and cartoons and worked as a cartoonist for the Montreal Star and the Toronto Globe after leaving Grip magazine. Later in life he returned to journalism and traveled and gave lectures known as "chalk talks," throughout Canada. He was politically oriented and was a Toronto alderman in 1907. He died at Toronto on October 2, 1923 and is entombed at Forest Hill Mausoleum, Toronto.
