- Notes
- William Dow was born in Banffshire, Scotland on February 11, 1777. In August 1832 he brought his wife and 11 children to Quebec, Canada and spent the winter at Stanstead in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. The family came to Whitby Township on March 8, 1833 via New York State, crossing the ice of Lake Ontario at Ogdensburg. In 1833 William Dow settled on lot 23, concession 3, Whitby Township and named his farm Glen Dhu. He was one of the leading stock breeders in Whitby and one of the first to import cattle from Scotland. He was one of the founders of the Whitby and Pickering Agricultural Societies, and influential in the farming community in Whitby for 22 years. He died at lot 23, concession 3, Whitby Township, on August 2, 1855 and is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa. William Dow's youngest daughter, Helen (Mrs. Hugh Miller) persuaded him to have his portrait painted by a German artist at Toronto in 1854, the year before he died. This is the only known portrait of William Dow.
