- A black and white portrait photograph of George McGillivray, 1813-1894. Mr. McGillivray is pictured seated holding a piece of paper in his left hand.
- Notes
- George McGillivray was born at St. Fergus, Aberdeenshire, Scotland on October 5, 1813. In 1833 he emigrated to Canada and went to Montreal and Vermont before accepting an invitation to settle in Whitby Township from William Dow, another Scottish settler. After staying with Mr. Dow for awhile, Mr. McGillivray settled on Burnside Farm, Lot 1, Concession 4, Pickering Township. By 1860 he had moved to Clovendale Farm, Lot 32, Concession 3, Whitby Township. In 1870, Mr. McGillivray moved to "Inverlynn" at the corner of Raglan and Giffard Streets in the Town of Whitby. He was one of the founders of the St. Andrew's Society of Whitby and Pickering in 1843 and was official bard of the society. He served one year on the Whitby Town Council and several years on the Board of Education. George McGillivray died at Whitby on January 29, 1894. He is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
