A black and white portrait photograph of Frederick William Hodson, 1856-1941.
Notes
Son of William Hodgson and Rebecca Spencer, Frederick William Hodson was born at Whitby Township, north-east of Brooklin, in October 1856. From 1880 to 1882 and 1887 to 1894, he was editor of The Farmers' Advocate, published at London, Ontario. From 1894 to 1899 he was Director of the Farmers' Institutes. He founded the Sheep and Swine Breeders' Associations of Canada and served as Secretary. Mr. Hodson was Dominion Livestock Commissioner at Ottawa from 1899 to 1906. He was responsible for founding the Guelph Winter Fair and the Canadian National Livestock Association. He set up the rules for standardization and registration of livestock. After 1906 he was manager of the Land Department for the Union Trust Company and Independent Order of Foresters, directing a campaign to sell and settle more than 850,000 acres of land in Western Canada. Mr. Hodson dropped the letter "g" from his name as a young man. He died at Brooklin on October 17, 1941, and is buried at the Dryden Baptist Cemetery, Whitby.
