A black and white portrait photograph of Ralph R. Mowbray, 1847-1941.
Notes
Ralph R. Mowbray was born in Reach Township on December 18, 1847, son of John Mowbray and Martha Hyland. Mr. Mowbray farmed for more than 56 years in Pickering Township. He was elected Deputy Reeve of Pickering Township in 1889 and served in municipal office for more than 25 years., retiring in 1918. He was elected Warden of Ontario County in 1893 and 1909. It was the first time a Deputy Reeve served as Warden in 1893. In 1927, Mr. Mowbray and his family retired to Brooklin, where he died on September 10, 1941. He is buried at Groveside Cemetery, Brooklin. Mr. Mowbray was the father of Mrs. R.S. McLaughlin, wife of the founder of General Motors of Canada. This photograph appeared in The Globe (Toronto), in the Saturday Illustrated Edition, on March 13, 1909. The caption appearing under this photograph in the newspaper read: "The leader of an odd municipal battle. Warden Ralph R. Mowbray, of Ontario County, selected recently to take the lead in rescinding a good roads by-law. The by-law had been passed a year or two ago to spend $120,000 on the county roads, but the people, resenting their not having been consulted, asked that it be rescinded, and this was accordingly done by the new County Council."
