Description
A black and white portrait photograph of Robert Luther Huggard (1836-1917). This photo was printed in the Gazette and Chronicle in 1917.
Notes
Robert Luther Huggard was born in Hope Township, Upper Canada (near what is now known as Port Hope, Ontario) on January 10, 1836. He farmed in Clarke Township until he married and came to Whitby in 1874. Brian Winter has noted that, R.L. Huggard represented the nursery firm of Stone and Wellington. R.L. Huggard was a member of the town council in 1898 and a member of the Board of Education. As well, he was a prominent Mason and in 1901, he was Master of Composite Lodge. He planted the trees and bushes at the House of Refuge in Whitby in 1901-1903. He died on March 16, 1917 at Whitby and is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
