- George Cormack was born in Aberdeen, Scotland on March 17, 1830. He was an apprentice carpenter for 5 years in Aberdeen and was one of the carpenters who built Balmoral Castle for Queen Victoria. In 1857 he came to Whitby where he started a wholesale and retail lumber business. He shipped a large quantity of lumber of the American market and had interests in timber land in northern Ontario. He died at Whitby on February 20, 1894. He is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
