Notes
Frederick William Browne was born one mile north-west of Columbus in east Whitby Township, October 12, 1870. He attended the Whitby Collegiate Institute and his career in life was as a grocer. He was a clerk in a grocery store at Lindsay for four years and for two years in Thomas Lawler's store in Whitby. In 1894 he went to Toronto and became assistant manager of the grocery department of the Robert Simpson Company. From 1905 to 1936 he operated his own grocery store at the corner of Carlton and Ontario Streets in Toronto. When he retired in 1936 he had made a considerable fortune and gave away thousands of dollars to organization in the Whitby area. He established the Fred W. Browne Memorial Prizes at the Whitby High School in 1947, restored the Columbus Bible Christian Cemetery in 1946, donated a Tremaine Map to Ontario County in 1950 and the address to the Prince of Wales from the Town of Whitby in 1860 to the town in 1952. He provided an electric organ for St. Thomas Anglican Church in Brooklin and helped pay off the indebtedness on the Brooklin Masonic Hall. He was a noted philanthropist in Toronto as well. He died at Willowdale on June 9, 1956 at the age of 85 and is buried in the Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Toronto.
