- John Watson was born August 25, 1806 in County Dublin, Ireland. He settled at Port Whitby about 1840 and was a partner with John Welsh, the first merchant to operate a grain shipping business from the harbor. From 1842 to 1849, Mr. Watson was manager, director, secretary and treasurer for the Windsor Warehouse Company. In 1849 he became a partner with James Rowe in James Rowe & Co., which operated a large warehouse and grain exporting business from Whitby harbor.Mr. Waston was manager of the company until the death of James Rowe in 1869 and operated the company on his own until his death at Port Whitby on October 7, 1879. Mr. Watson was treasurer of the Whitby, Lake Scugog, Simcoe and Huron Road Company starting in 1852 and was its president in 1857. He was Councillor for the south ward from 1855 to 1859 and Deputy Reeve of Whitby in 1861-62. John Watson is buried at St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Port Whitby.
