Notes
Reverend Robert Darlington was born at Ballytonny, County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1807. He began studies to be a minister in Dublin, but was recalled because of family reverses. He was later taught the Methodist ministry by Reverend Fossey Tackaberry in County Wicklow. In 1833, he emigrated to Canada settling in Darlington Township, but soon moved to Whitby Township where he went into business, while also acting as a local preacher, class leader and Sabbath School teacher. He traveled as a preacher on the Nelson, Peterborough and Markham circuits until his health failed and he returned to Brooklin. From 1853 until his death in 1881, he was Postmaster at Brooklin, and in the 1850's was Treasurer of Whitby Township. He was a part-time pastor at the Brooklin Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1858-59, 1863-65, 1868-69, 1872-74 and 1878-81. He died at Brooklin on April 4, 1881 and is buried at Groveside Cemetery, Brooklin. He was married to Sarah Annie Hunter, eldest daughter of Dr. James Hunter, Whitby's rebel of 1837.
