- Bishop Philander Smith, Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Canada from 1847 to 1870, was born in the town of Blenheim, County of Schoharie in New York State on April 27, 1796 and spent his boyhood in Delaware County, New York. In 1815 he moved to Canada, settling at Lynn, near Brockville. He became a supply preacher for the Methodist Church in 1819 and was ordained as a deacon in 1822. He lived for many years at Brooklin where he died on March 28, 1870. Bishop Smith was buried at the Methodist Episcopal Cemetery, Brooklin, and his stone was later moved to Groveside Cemetery, Brooklin.
