- This is a black and white portrait photograph of Colonel John Edwin Farewell, (1840-1923).In this portrait he is believed to be about 25 years of age.
- Notes
- John Edwin Farewell was born in East Whitby Township on February 18, 1840, a descendant of Irish ancestors and was adopted by Abraham Farewell, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ontario South. He was educated in Whitby and Barrie and received a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Toronto in 1864. From 1864 to 1872 he practised law in Oshawa, Whitby and Bowmanville. In 1872 he became Ontario County Crown Attorney; in 1877 Clerk of the Peace; and in 1882 County Clerk. He saw service in the Fenian Raids and was commanding officer of the 34th Regiment from 1898 to 1902. For about 30 years starting in 1874 he was a member and chairman of the Whitby Public School Board. Colonel Farewell published a history of Ontario County in 1907. He died at Oshawa on December 29, 1923 and is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
