- A black and white portrait photograph of John Lawrence Smith.
- Notes
- John Lawrence Smith, son of William Smith and Hannah Norgrove, was born on lot 21, Broken Front Concession, Whitby Township on October 11, 1838. He was a farmer throughout his life and a strong supporter of the Methodist Church. He and Elizabeth Strickland were married. He was one of the founders of the Whitby Methodist Tabernacle and a trustee of the church for many years. He was also one of the founders of the Ontario Ladies' College in 1874 and a member of the board of directors. He was a member of the Whitby Township Council in 1875-1877 and 1890-1892; Deputy Reeve from 1893-1897 and Reeve from 1883-1884 and 1898. He was Warden of Ontario County in 1884. He died at his farm at Corbett's Point, lot 21, Broken Front Concession, Whitby Township on May 24, 1928 and is buried in Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
