- Oscar Henry Downey was born in East Whitby Township on October 31, 1877 and farmed for most of his life at Myrtle and Myrtle Station. He was a member of the Masons and the Oddfellows and was Master of Mount Zion Lodge, Brooklin in 1924 and Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge of Canada in Ontario in 1938. For many years he was treasurer of Mount Zion Lodge. Many people called Oscar Henry Downey by his initials "O.H.". He served on the Whitby Township council from 1920-1923, 1938-1939 and was Reeve from 1924-1925 and 1940-1944. In 1942 he was Warden of Ontario County. Mr. Downey also served on the Whitby Township Planning Board, Oshawa Suburban Roads Commission, Oshawa and Brooklin Fair Boards. He was a past president of the Oshawa Fair and a member of the Ontario County Plowmen's Association. Mr. Downey was the first manager for the County Home for the Aged when it was built in 1951 (now known as Fairview Lodge). As well, he served on the Groveside Cemetery Board. He died at the Oshawa General Hospital on July 30, 1960 and is buried at Groveside Cemetery, Brooklin.
