Description
A black and white photograph of the naval crew of the H.M.C.S. Whitby at St. John's Newfoundland.
Notes
The Corvette H.M.C.S. Whitby was launched at Midland, Ontario on September 18, 1943 and commissioned on June 6, 1944. She did not arrive at Halifax until August 16 owing to a layover en route at Shelburne for repairs. Following workups in Bermuda in September she sailed direct to St. John's, Newfoundland arriving on September 30 and was assigned to EG C-4. She left St. John's on October 5 for Londonderry to join the group with which she was to serve for the balance of the war. The Whitby left Londonderry for Canada in Mid-June 1945 and was paid off on July 16 and placed in reserve at Sorel. She was sold in 1946 for merchant service and reportedly renamed Bengo. The Captain was A/LCDR R. K. Lester, RCNVR. This information was printed in "The Ships of Canada's Naval Forces" by Ken Macpherson and John Burgess, 1981. This photograph was probably the last picture of the crew following decommission on July 16, 1945.
