Description

This is a black and white photograph of Muriel Helena Sissons (1903-1992).

Notes

Muriel Helena Sissons was born at Fort Frances, Ontario, on January 12, 1903. She moved to Barrie in 1908 and to Toronto in 1910, where she was the first Valedictorian at North Toronto Collegiate Institute. She was Victoria College's first student to take full courses of Latin, French and Greek, graduating in 1924. She obtained her Master of Arts degree in classics at the American Academy of Archaeology and Fine Arts in Rome, Italy and worked on archeological digs in Greece and Rome. In 1925-1926 Miss Sissons taught Latin at Bowmanville High School, and from 1927 to 1944 she taught French, English and History as well as Latin at Port Credit. From 1944 to 1951 she was Dean of the Ontario Ladies' College, Whitby. From 1951 until her retirement in 1968, she taught Latin, English and Ancient History at Central Collegiate in Oshawa. On her retirement she was presented with an award of merit and life membership the following year by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers; Federation. Miss Sissons was one of the founders of the Whitby Branch of the Ontario Humane Society in 1959. She provided funds for the construction of the Whitby Animal Shelter in 1968, and was awarded the Mayor's Medal in 1975. A Plaque in her honor was unveiled at the shelter in 1982. Miss Sissons established the first outdoor cattery in Canada at the shelter. She died at Whitby on July 27, 1992 and is buried in Union Cemetery, Barrie, Ontario.
