Ethelbert Cyril Rich was born at Penge, near London, England in 1905 and came to Whitby with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ethelbert Rich in 1920. In 1923, he was hired as an attendant at the Ontario Hospital Whitby. Late on the night of March 12, 1933 while he was alone on duty in Cottage 14 he was attacked in the bathroom by a patient and strangled to death with his necktie.
