A Whitby girl captured first place in a national gymnastics competition, May 28 in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Thirteen – year – old Christina McDonald took top honors in the Junior Women’s Compulsory and Optional Events, making her the Junior National Champion.

“We’re thrilled, it’s quite an accomplishment,” said Debbie Vidmar, Christina’s assistant coach at the Oshawa Gemini Gymnastic Club.

“It helps her because she’s relatively new on the national scene,” added Ms. Vidmar. “Winning the junior nationals surprised a lot of people who weren’t aware of her.”

Christina, a student at St. John the Evangelist School, won the bars and vault and placed well enough on the floor and beam to take the victory.

She will compete in the Canadian Classic gymnastics event June 25 in Toronto. She will be up against competitors from the United States, France, Italy and Australia.
