Toronto – Olympic gold medalist Anne Ottenbrite was among the 27 Whitby area athletes who were honored by the provincial government at the Ontario Sport Awards Dinner held last Friday (April 12).

Tourism and Recreation Minister Claude Bennett praised all the athletes to be honored, declaring each of them to be “individuals dedicated to sports excellence and good citizenship.”

The awards are presented annually to Ontario amateur athletes who win individual or team sport titles in national or international competitions.

Ottenbrite won the gold in the 200-metre breaststroke at last summer’s Olympics, as well as a silver in the 100 metre breaststroke and a bronze medal as a member of Canada’s individual medley relay team. Two days before this banquet Ottenbrite was inducted into the Order of Canada by Governor-General Jeanne Sauve.
