The beautiful Stone Font lately placed in All Saints’ Church in this town, the production of one of our townsmen, deserves more than passing attention. The Font, which is the production of the chisel of Mr. Wolfenden, marble manufacturer and sculptor, is also a monument of his liberality, having been as a gift from him to the church, and in the highest degree, reflects credit upon his artistic skill. It is of Ohio stone, and of massive proportions, the weight of material being over a ton. From a stone platform and step, rise a group of four clustered pillars, with heavy capitals and moldings. Upon these are placed the Font proper, which is octagonal in shape, with beveled upper and lower edges. Four of the eight sides are plain, and the remainder have counter-sunk quarter-foils, containing appropriate emblems, richly carved, in high relief. The upper edge has cut on it in bold Old English the words, “Suffer little Children to come unto ME, and forbid them not.” We are informed that there is no better Font in any church in Canada, although there may be others of more expensive materials. The design is copied from an excellent example in England, with modifications by Messrs. Gundry & Langley, architects, Toronto. Altogether, it is highly creditable to the artistic skill of Mr. Wolfenden and adds not a little to the appearance of the handsome edifice of All Saints’.
