- Notes
- J.B. Warren was born at Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland on November 19, 1798. In 1821, he came to Whitby Township with his brother William. He opened a store at Hamer's Corners (corner of Dundas and Anderson Streets) and from 1824 to 1836 was the first postmaster for Whitby. The Warren store was the only store between York (Toronto) and Port Hope when it opened. In 1837, J.B. Warren moved to Oshawa and built a flour mill on the north side of Highway 2 at Oshawa Creek. He lived where R.S. McLaughlin's home (Parkwood Estate) stands, in Oshawa. Besides keeping a store and mill, he was a manager of the Ontario Bank in Oshawa. He died at Oshawa on February 23, 1879 and is buried at St. George's Anglican Cemetery, Oshawa.
