- Description
- Rectangular postal cover & letter from Brooklin. Top right corner indicates this letter was paid and was cancelled by hand. Letter is from Caroline Long to her brother and sister William and Eliza in Chazy Landing, New York. The letter has two postal marks, one broken double circle "TORONTO Feb 15" on the back of the cover, and another single circle with inscribed "LEWISTON NY Feb 17"on the front cover.
- Notes
- Postal covers were used instead of envelopes by many people during this time period as a means of avoiding the extra cost for postage. People would use one page for both the "envelope" and the letter, often writing wherever they could to use up the entire page. Once the letter was finished, they would fold it up into a neat rectangular shape and seal it with wax prior to sending it out through the post.
